Telling Africa's Story

Along with the artistic methods and archaeology comes the often complex themes of history, identity, power and religion which inevitably shape self-expression in any given period. The many interpretations of historians and scholars offer a deeper insight into the meanings and significance for us to embrace, challenge and debate.

The Kingdom of Lala sets its lens on pre-colonial history, as far back as the origins of humans to offer an understanding and visual modern-day interpretation of the world's first civilisations that made things and painted pictures. Artefacts are seemingly much more than a response to the environment and the necessity to survive, they provide an insight to social life and conceptual thought and have impactful aesthetic value.

The inspiration behind our collections

Through our textile designs, we tell stories of this ancient time, drawing inspiration from tribal rituals, clothing and costumes, arts and crafts, historical  artefacts, history and culture and the sounds,  sights and colours of an irresistible landscape. Our launch collection features the Ashanti tribe’s gold pectoral discs, known as akrafokonmu or 'soul washers disc' found in  ancient Ghana, West Africa. The discs were worn as protective and prized emblems by important members of the court and sometimes the King himself. These ‘soul washers’ were selected to tend to the King. Through ritual activity, their purpose was to restore the King’s life source. Our Robes of Maa print is inspired by the infamous Masaai tribe of East Africa and our throws re-imagine some of the world's most prehistoric art, discovered in the archaeological site known as Blombos Cave, located off the coast of South Africa.

Africa's Influence on Pop-Culture

There is so much to draw inspiration from. In today's world, we are surrounded by diverse cultures that have influenced popular culture in various ways. African design has played a significant role in shaping modern-day fashion, music, and art. One of the most notable examples of this is through fashion. African prints, such as Ankara and Kente, have become a global fashion trend, with designers from all over the world incorporating these prints into their collections. These prints, which were once only worn in Africa, have now become a symbol of style and cultural appreciation as we see more African designers breaking through and receiving the recognition they deserve.

The influence of African talent has long been a strong force in music, rhythms, beats, and African instrumentation has heavily influenced popular music for centuries. As the world continues to embrace music such as afro beats and hip life these genres are now dominating popular music, stepping to the forefront of the music industry in their own right.

There is so much to discover and learn from Africa, a vast and diverse land, inspiring and captivating us with its rich history and culture, expressed through its distinctive and wonderful art forms. Thank you Africa for all your gifts.
